When AI agents become DeFi users: x402 and ERC-8004 explained

· 5 min read

The next big group of DeFi users may not be people. AI agents now pay for services, trade and manage yield on their own. Two new standards make this possible: x402 lets agents pay, and ERC-8004 lets them prove who they are and how well they have behaved. Together they form the base layer of what the industry calls 'agentic finance'.

What is an AI agent in DeFi?

An AI agent is software that acts on a goal without a human approving each step. In DeFi, that could mean moving stablecoins to the best lending rate, rebalancing a portfolio, or buying data before making a trade.

The idea is not new. Trading bots have existed since 2020. What changed, according to Cambrian's Q1 2026 report, is that in 2025 'the loop closed': agents began acting under strict rules with no human sign-off. To do that safely, agents need two things humans take for granted: a way to pay, and a way to be trusted.

x402: payments built into the web

The web has had a status code for payments since the 1990s: HTTP 402, 'Payment Required'. It was never really used. Coinbase and Cloudflare revived it with x402.

Here is the flow:

  • An agent requests a resource, such as a price feed or an API call.
  • The server replies with a 402 code and its price, for example 0.01 USDC.
  • The agent pays in stablecoins onchain.
  • The agent resends the request with proof of payment and gets the data.

No account, no credit card, no subscription. That makes tiny, per-request payments practical for machines.

Adoption has been fast. By Q1 2026, x402 had passed $50 million in cumulative volume and 15 million transactions in a single 30-day period. It runs on Base, Solana, BSC and Polygon, with partners including AWS, Stripe and Visa.

ERC-8004: identity and reputation for agents

Paying is only half the problem. If an unknown agent offers to manage your funds, why trust it? ERC-8004 answers that. It went live on Ethereum mainnet on 29 January 2026, and over 24,000 agents registered within weeks.

Its authors come from MetaMask, the Ethereum Foundation, Google and Coinbase. The standard sets up three onchain registries:

RegistryWhat it storesHuman equivalent
IdentityAn NFT for each agent, linked to an 'agent card' with its name, purpose and endpointsA business card or company registration
ReputationScores from 0 to 100 left by clients after a task, signed and hashedCustomer reviews
ValidationResults from independent checkers that verified the agent's workAn audit report

ERC-8004 deliberately leaves payments out. It is designed to work alongside x402: one standard handles trust, the other moves the money.

Where agents meet DeFi today

Cambrian groups agent projects into four categories: trading and portfolio optimization, yield generation, prediction and gaming, and analysis. Leading projects Bankr and Giza each logged more than 900 deposits in a 30-day window in early 2026.

A notable finding: products with the most assets under management are still rule-based, not driven by large language models. Users trust agents with money when their behaviour is predictable.

Risks to keep in mind

  • Bugs move money. An agent with wallet access can lose funds in seconds if its logic or prompt is flawed.
  • Reputation can be gamed. Scores are only as honest as the clients and validators behind them.
  • Unproven track records. Most agents are months old. Past returns over a short bull run say little.
  • Unclear regulation. Rules for software that manages other people's money are still being written.

A simple rule: give any agent its own wallet with spending limits, and never your main wallet's keys.

The takeaway

DeFi was built so that anyone could use finance without permission. x402 and ERC-8004 extend 'anyone' to software. If agents become everyday DeFi users, demand for stablecoins, block space and reliable price data could grow fast. For now, it is an early market worth understanding before trusting with real money.
